First Step towards a Dystopian Future:

Pasig River Expressway (PAREX) is a proposed megaproject in Metro Manila that includes building a six-lane skyway over Pasig River. Over the past few months; architects, urban planners, and environmentalists alike have united in disapproving the project due to how damaging, ineffective, inefficient, and unprepossessing it is to our environment and city. It is often and crucially cited how this expressway will kill the ecosystem in Pasig River; how it will induce more people to buy cars, hence heavier traffic; how it will make the land value in Metro Manila less; as well as how it will devastate the view of numerous heritage sites in the city. Currently, PAREX is approved for construction by the government, and progress in building it will skyrocket soon enough without legal action.

EDSA 2032 by Paulo Alcazaren

Paulo Alcazaren, a former President of the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects, shares his vision of the future Metro Manila. Viewed in today's lens, the future metropolis would be more chaotic with most infrastructure exclusive to the privileged few and inhumane to whoever's left.

At the Cost of our Environment

The vision of PAREX simply ignores the environmental burden of the said infrastructure. For a skyway that will ultimately benefit the few and induce heavier traffic, the environmental effects are monumental. At the cost of our environment and at the literal cost of the project, a lot more that will serve all of us can be done.
